Retro Stockings/Lingerie in Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day

Over the weekend I went to see the new movie Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day. An adorable and well done film - Miss Pettigrew takes place in the late 30's and features some fantastic costuming - in both outer and undergarments.

In one scene, the fashion forward Delysia (Amy Adams) takes her new social secretary, Guinevere (Frances McDormand), to a lingerie fashion show. In another, Delysia is seen changing clothes and wearing a fantastic six strap garter belt with seamed stockings. Unfortunately, I can't find any screenshots from this scene yet - but when the movie comes out on DVD I may do an update.

For now, here are a couple screenshots from the lingerie show:

If you're looking for a relatively light-hearted movie with great acting right now - I recommend going to see Miss Pettigrew. And for those with an interest in retro clothing and lingerie, Miss Pettigrew is a real treat.

The Look: Tights with open toe shoes

A fellow StockinGirl recently pointed me towards this Newsday article from the Los Angeles Times. The article talks about the do's and dont's of wearing tights and socks with open toe shoes like sandals and stilettos. Personally, I don't like the idea of ankle socks with sandals, but the tights look pretty cute if done right.

Eric Damon, costume designer for the hit show Gossip Girl admits "Though he frequently matches open-toe footwear with tights and socks on "Gossip Girl," [he] also knows the look can be a disaster in real life."

Here's a snippet of some tips from the article:

"Novices should start with a simple peep-toe pump and solid opaque tight. After that, a high-heel T-strap or platform sandal works best. For formal fetes, delicate stilettos look sleek with opaque tights.

But avoid this season's popular gladiator sandal and anything with a lot of straps. Monochromatic shoes are much easier than shoes with wooden heels. Playful knee socks are another popular "Gossip Girl" look but are a no-no with thin stilettos. "It comes off a little too kittenish." Decide if you're going for a sophisticated or good-humored look."
